There are connections to themes from other songs in ‘Under The Rainbow' — numbing with alcohol, or going through the motions as in ‘My Machine Heart’ and ‘Waking Up’ — but it also seems to provide a broader, more zoomed-out social commentary than the other songs on the album. Namely, the promise of the post-war period, symbolized here by spaceships and Ferris wheels, is void. The idea of progress, that things will continue to get better, is now in question. The song leaves you feeling unclear as to whether the final message is to live fully anyway (‘Dance in a house on fire.’) or that the idea of living in the moment is just another fantasy in which we take refuge.
